How to Prepare Your Cat for Boarding: A Stress-Smart Checklist

5 min read

Leaving your cat while you travel can feel like a big adjustment—for both of you. The good news is that a little preparation can make the transition easier and give the boarding team the information needed to care for your cat’s individual routine.

At Angelcare Pet Resort in Mt. Pleasant, we provide cat boarding for families throughout Racine, Kenosha and the surrounding communities. Our 7,000-square-foot facility offers three cat-condo options, including accommodations for one cat, multiple cats from the same family and cats who enjoy a view outside.

Use this checklist to prepare for a calmer arrival and a more comfortable stay.

1. Reserve your cat’s condo early

Boarding demand often increases around holidays, school breaks and long weekends. Contact Angelcare as soon as you know your travel dates so our team can confirm availability and help you choose the right accommodation:

  • Single Cat Condo: A cozy space for one cat.

  • Deluxe Cat Condo: A roomier option that can accommodate two cats.

  • Penthouse Cat Condo: A larger condo with an outside view that can accommodate up to four cats.

If this is your cat’s first boarding stay, you are also welcome to ask about touring the facility before booking.

2. Confirm vaccine records and payment

Angelcare requires proof of current vaccinations for every boarding guest, and stays must be prepaid. Ask our team which vaccinations are currently required for cats and how records should be submitted. If another veterinary practice maintains your cat’s records, request them well before drop-off so there is time to resolve any missing information.

3. Help your cat feel comfortable with the carrier

Avoid waiting until departure day to bring out the carrier. Leave it open in a familiar area several days—or longer—before the stay. Add a familiar blanket and reward your cat for calmly exploring or resting inside it.

On travel day, use a secure, well-ventilated carrier that is large enough for your cat to stand, turn around and lie down. Covering part of the carrier with a lightweight towel may help reduce visual stimulation. Keep the carrier level and secure it according to the manufacturer’s instructions during the drive.

4. Keep food instructions simple and specific

A familiar diet can help avoid unnecessary digestive changes. Before packing food, ask Angelcare whether you should bring your cat’s regular diet and how it should be packaged.

Write down:

  • The food brand and variety.

  • The amount served at each meal.

  • Your cat’s normal feeding times.

  • Any food allergies or veterinary diet instructions.

Label all approved food and supplies with your cat’s first and last name. Avoid introducing a new food immediately before boarding unless your veterinarian recommends the change.

5. Discuss medications before the stay

Tell Angelcare about every medication or supplement your cat receives when you make the reservation—not at the last minute during drop-off. Ask whether the team can accommodate the medication, how it must be labeled and whether an administration fee applies.

Bring medication in its original labeled container with clear written directions. Include the dose, timing and best method for giving it. Do not change or skip a prescribed medication to simplify boarding without first speaking with your veterinarian.

6. Share your cat’s routine and personality

Every cat responds differently to a new environment. A few clear notes can help the team understand what is normal for yours. Let us know:

  • Whether your cat tends to hide or seek attention.

  • Favorite ways to play or interact.

  • Typical eating and litter-box habits.

  • Handling preferences or sensitive areas.

  • Recent changes in health, appetite or behavior.

Specific information is more useful than a general description such as “shy” or “difficult.” For example, “She usually hides at first but comes out for treats” gives the team a clearer picture.

7. Ask what you may bring from home

A familiar-smelling item can be comforting for some cats, but boarding facilities must also consider cleaning, storage and safety. Before packing a bed, blanket or toy, ask which personal items Angelcare currently allows. Label every approved item clearly and leave anything irreplaceable at home.

8. Choose reliable emergency contacts

Provide the best number for reaching you during the trip as well as a local backup contact who is familiar with your cat. Make sure both people know about the boarding stay and can respond if the team has a question.

You should also review what you authorize Angelcare to do if your cat needs veterinary attention while you are away. Share any important medical history that may not already be in your cat’s record.

9. Keep drop-off calm and organized

Cats often notice changes in our energy and routine. Give yourself enough time to arrive without rushing, but keep the actual handoff warm and simple. Bring your cat in a secure carrier along with the required records, approved supplies, written care instructions and contact information.

A clear, organized handoff helps our team focus on welcoming your cat and getting them settled.

  • Written feeding, medication and behavior notes.

  • Approved and labeled comfort items.

  • Completed payment and any required forms.
