8 Scary Halloween Dangers for Pet Safety

ree

Halloween is full of fun for families—but it can also bring hidden hazards for pets. From tempting treats to spooky décor, this holiday has its share of risks for our furry friends. Here are eight common Halloween dangers and how to keep your pets safe.

1. Candy and Sweets

Chocolate, raisins, and xylitol (a common sweetener) are toxic to dogs and cats. Keep all candy, wrappers, and bowls of treats far from reach—and make sure children know not to share.

2. Pet Costumes

Costumes can be cute, but not all pets enjoy them. Avoid anything that restricts breathing, movement, or vision. If your pet seems stressed, it’s best to skip the costume altogether.

3. Decorations and Candles

Jack-o’-lanterns with real candles can burn curious noses or tails. Opt for battery-powered candles and keep decorations like fake cobwebs or string lights out of reach to prevent tangling or ingestion.

4. Candy Wrappers and Packaging

Leftover candy wrappers, sticks, and twist ties can cause choking or intestinal blockages. Clean up candy areas promptly and use covered trash cans.

5. Glow Sticks and Glow Jewelry

If chewed, glow jewelry can leak dibutyl phthalate, which irritates a pet’s mouth and causes drooling, foaming, or vomiting. Keep glow accessories away from playful pets.

6. Identification and Safety

If your pet joins you outdoors, make sure they wear reflective gear and have up-to-date ID tags or a microchip. Halloween night can be chaotic—take extra precautions to prevent escape.

7. Trick-or-Treat Traffic

A constant stream of costumed visitors can frighten pets. Create a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door to reduce stress and prevent accidental escapes.

8. Alcoholic Beverages

Even small amounts of alcohol can make pets sick. Keep cups and bottles out of reach, and remind guests not to leave drinks unattended where pets can access them.
